Apple Thunderbolt Gigabit Ethernet adapter vs Gigabit Ethernet USB 2.0 adapter. I just ran some comparisons, and I know some out there will be wondering if it’s worth it to pony up for the new Thunderbolt adapter. The short answer is yes. Looking for a little more detail?
Transferring a single 792MB file across a network: 15 seconds with the Apple TB GB; 28 seconds with USB GB
Transferring a directory of 5250 files totaling 4.2GB: 1:15 with the Apple TB GB; 2:12 with the USB GB.
So, in a nutshell you’re looking at about an 80% improvement in throughput. Under optimal conditions, I’ve seen the Apple TB GB sustain over 100MB/s on large files, while the USB GB could only sustain 39MB/s on the same files. Worth $29 anyday in my book.
